Rock Never Stops
Cinderella, Ratt, Quiet Riot & Firehouse
July 2, 2005
Zoo Ampitheater
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

By Jeb Wright

On July 2nd Classic Rock Revisited took a trip back to the 80’s as Rock Never Stops rolled into town. Firehouse, Quiet Riot, Ratt and Cinderella are this year’s package, touring the country reminding everyone that in the 80’s it was all about hair, spandex, women, guitar solos and partying.

We arrived at the venue but were forced to miss Firehouse as the local event staff failed to handle our tickets and passes correctly. For the uninitiated, the Rock n’ Roll world can be a confusing place.

Four bands on a package tour means four tour busses, four itineraries, four tour managers and four of everything else that one needs – plus the managers are dealing with the fragile ego needs of 16 musicians! Unless you have the budget of Ozzfest, this can get to be a wild ride. Remember that the bands pull into town early in the day and leave by the end of the night. The traveling Rock n’ Roll Circus relies on cell phones and email contacts to make sure all journalists; groupies, VIP’s and guests of the band and crew are taken care of. Even under the best of circumstances things can slip through the cracks.

Now, even when the proper authorities are notified and all the wheels are in motion, there is still one obstacle that is not easy to overcome: The Local Event Staff. What we have here are minimum wage earners who are there to get into the show free and either don’t care about helping anyone out, don’t understand what they are supposed to be doing or have no idea what to do if something goes askew. That said, when we arrived and went to the Will Call window, there was an envelope with my name that had six tickets in it and no VIP, Press or Meet & Greet Passes. There were not six of us even in attendance. I knew it was no use complaining to the local staff so we went inside the venue and headed to the security gated VIP area located stage right from the main stage.

Once I explained myself and showed my credentials, I was let in to talk to the tour manager, who, of course, was nowhere to be found. I hung by a wooden fence and decided I would have far more luck looking for Kevin Dubrow and Frankie Banali of Quiet Riot than I would have looking for Cinderella’s tour manager.

My intuition paid off as I saw Frankie Banali walk out of the dressing room and head for the stage. Banali is a great friend of Classic Rock Revisited so I yelled his name and pointed to my CRR t-shirt. He smiled and came over and we talked. Quiet Riot front man Kevin Dubrow saw me and came over as well. Kevin has been a guest interviewer on CRR in the past. He interviewed ex-Jethro Tull guitar player and founding member of Blodwyn Pig Mick Abrahams and he did an interview with Glenn Hughes as well.

I told the boys what happened and Frankie went back into the building and came back with the passes we needed. We agreed to meet up after the show as the band gathered to take the stage. While I am friends with the boys, I am a rock journalist. I recently gave QR a poor review on their Live in Japan DVD so don’t think that what I am going to say is sugar coated out of respect for our friendship.

That fact of the matter is that Quiet Riot do not belong 3rd on the Rock Never Stops bill. I am not saying they should be headliners as that spot belongs to Cinderella however they belong ahead of Ratt. The main reason I say this is that the band is playing loud and proud.

It is no secret that Rudy Sarzo and Dubrow could not see eye-to-eye. Instead of continuing to fight, the band re-hired veteran bass expert Chuck Wright while Sarzo moved on to play bass for Ronnie James Dio. This move has proved to be a wise one for the band’s metal heath (pun intended) as well as for their musical vocabulary. For starters, Quiet Riot is having fun onstage; they are jamming out and extending songs. They even played a few bars of the Led Zep classic “Whole Lotta Love” – though we wish they would have gone ahead and played the entire song. Dubrow, dressed head to toe in leopard skin, looked like Rod Stewart gone bad. He strutted across the stage and entertained the crowd – even having Banali leave his drum stand to see a great set of tits being flashed at the band. Frankie joined the fun when he commented that several the men in the crowd who were shirtless could make good use of a manzier!

In the end, it was “Come on Feel the Noize” and “Bang Your Head” that got the crowd into a frenzy. Banali hits the skins harder than most drummers and his love of music is evident and seems to ignite the rest of the band. Dubrow is in the game for the right reasons as well; he lives for the stage. Banali is the Ringleader and Dubrow the Master of Ceremonies.

Quiet Riot is a band on a mission to prove they are much more than history remembers them – judging from this performance, they are headed in the right direction. After the show, we hung backstage with Dubrow and were getting into a pretty good conversation about great British rock bands when a good looking blonde called to Kevin from the VIP barrier. She produced a set of huge breasts for him to sign and then whispered something in his ear. Kevin allowed her in, politely excused himself from our conversation, and then walked with her to the tour bus proving the spirit of the 80’s really is alive and well.

Next up was Ratt. Classic Rock Revisited has never been out to be utterly rude to bands but to be honest; Ratt’s show was very boring. The band clearly was going through the motions. There were no smiles and there was no spontaneity.

Original vocalist Stephen Pearcy is long gone, replaced by ex-LA Guns singer Jizzy Pearl. Also new to Ratt is John Corabi, best known as the man who replaced Vince Neal in Motley Crue. From the backstage buzz, it appears Corabi remembers it well – perhaps too well. Perhaps Pearl is the front man instead of Corabi because of John’s case of LSD – Lead Singers Disease!

On a positive note, Pearl was giving it his all onstage and was in good voice. He is the best thing the band has going for it at this time. Ratt played all their hits and the highlight was predictably “Round & Round.” Ratt seems like a band not very into being a band. Perhaps the heat got to them; perhaps being on the road is wearing thin or maybe they are just in it for the paycheck. Whatever the reason, their show was lackluster overall and they should be dropped to 3rd on the bill because of it.

Warren DeMartini is still an excellent guitar player but he really looked like he was going through the motions onstage. Up until this show, I had always figured that Ratt’s problems were due to Pearcy being a lunatic. In my mind, Corabi and Pearl were wonderful additions to the band but with whispers of egos out of control and a band that does not give 100% onstage, it appears Ratt’s troubles may run deeper than previously thought.

Last up were Cinderella. Often lumped into the hair band scene, Cinderella were always much more. Led by Tom Keifer, the band played a set of greatest hits including staples “Coming Home,” “Nobody’s Fool,” “Shake Me,” “Don’t Know What Ya Got Till Its Gone” and “Gypsy Road.” The crowd responded with loud, thunderous applause after each song and were into every note played onstage.

Keifer, who has had severe vocal problems in the past, sounded like his old self. Never one of the best voices of the 80’s, he is one of the most recognizable. He is the leader onstage and directs the entire show. There is not much interaction with the crowd – in fact, Tom seems to be very crowd shy. He is businesslike in his attitude though he plays with passion and you can tell what he is doing is very important to him. The rest of the band responds with note perfect renditions of Keifer’s songs, resulting in a solid rock show.

Rock Never Stops is basically the Quiet Riot/Cinderella show. These two bands are very solid and punch out a great show. QR are more in-your-face showmen who deliver the goods with power and energy whereas Cinderella are more about finesse and articulation. In the end, the show proves that the 80’s are still alive and well and that rock, indeed, never does stop.

Rock Never StopsCinderella, Ratt, Quiet Riot, and Firehouse
Smirnoff Music Centre
7/1/05

By: Wendy Rae

Firehouse, Quiet Riot, Ratt, and Cinderella transformed about 8,000 people back 20 years in time, at the Smirnoff Music Centre in Dallas, Texas. Firehouse opened at 7:00 p.m. with an impressive show. Frontman, C.J. Snare thanked the audience that was there by saying, “Thanks to all of you who rushed home from work so that you could be here to see us play. The ampitheatre which was a little more than a quarter full watched as Firehouse performed some of those memorable hits from the early ‘90s like, “Shake And Tumble” and “Don’t Treat Me Bad” from there self titled Firehouse album. After their set the band singed autographs and talked to the fans out in the concession area.
It was then time for Quiet Riot, who in my opinion could have headlined the show. Kevin DuBrow whose hair is shorter, but was still wearing those leopard skin spandex pants can rock just as hard has he did in the ‘80’s. The fans were on their feet as the band played those yesteryear favorites including “Cum On Feel The Noise” and “Metal Health (Bang Your Head)”. After the Quiet Riot set I went to get a drink to prepare for the second half of this hair band show. I saw DuBrow walking though the crowd to get to a place where he could sign autographs and hold a meet and greet for the fans.

Ratt took the stage without their founding member Stephen Pearcy who was replaced by Jizzy Pearl in 2000. Although Pearl did a pretty good job with the lead vocals on the Ratt classics, it was just not the same without Pearcy. I am not one to fault bands for changing the line-up. I think that to keep the band’s music alive it is important to tour with or with out the members that made the band famous. However, this change was a little harder to swallow than others have been because Pearl just doesn’t have the range that Pearcy did. Ratt did perform some of their greats including, “Round And Round”.

Cinderella took the stage to close the show. The band still has great showmanship and stage presence. The crowd loved it when the band started their show with pyrotechnics then went into “Night Songs” off their first album. Cinderella rocked and although they have changed their look from the eighties “hair band” they still put on a show as if it were 20 years ago. Tom Keifer, Cinderella’s front man is an amazing talent as he led the band through their vintage hits like “Nobody’s Fool” and “Don’t Know What You Got”. It is amazing to think that Keifer can sound as great as he did in the early years after undergoing the such an extensive surgery on his vocal cords. The set seemed a little short for a headliner but they covered their rock hits and returned for an encore of “Shake Me” which the entire crowd sang along with.

The show was very entertaining and brought back a lot of memories. It was fun to sing along and play air guitar with the other metal head fans from the eighties.
