Me encanta The Breeders.

The Breeders Say Aloha to London

The Breeders took the stage last night(Nov 17) at the Scala in London after TV on the Radio bowed out of the 4AD 25th Anniversary party. The Breeders were originally slated to play two shows over the weekend as part of the 4AD Anniversary spectacular, but ended up performing in place of TVotR because of the unexpected death of frontman Tunde Adibimpe's father. According to NME.com, the Breeders played an eight-song set, covering material from all three of their full-length albums. Highlights of the performance were "No Aloha," off 1993's Last Splash and "Oh!" from 1990's Pod. Last night's performance also marked the first time bassist Josephine Wiggs has played with the band since the early '90s. The remaining members of TVotR played a DJ set after the Breeders short performance. The 4AD anniversary series continues this week in London, with performances from the Mountain Goats, the Celebration, and Kristen Hersh. Blonde Redhead plays the final performance on November 27.

The Breeders @ Blackheath Hall

Jon Henderson - 21/11/2005

London, 20th November

As part of 4AD’s 25th birthday celebrations, The Breeders played their second of two back to back gigs in the plush surroundings of Blackheath Hall in London.
4AD really is a special record label having introduced to the world some of the most influential bands of the 80’s and 90’s such as the Pixies, Throwing Muses and Belly to name only a few. It is also rightly heralded and respected for its uniqueness and longevity in always standing firmly by its independent status and principles and by also producing some of the most fascinating and beautiful record cover artwork which is still unsurpassed anywhere else in the industry. The Breeders are indeed still one of 4AD’s remaining super groups and they exceeded everyone’s expectations tonight with a show of rare quality, excitement and a great deal of reminiscing.

Opening with No Aloha, Kim and Kelley Deal were initially joined on stage by the Title TK line up of musicians and they proceeded to play various songs from said album including the mosh pit favourite Huffer and Little Fury. Then to my utter delight and complete surprise two of the original band’s line up entered the fray and wowed the enthusiastic and very mixed crowd with a trip down Memory Lane. Original bassist Josephine Wiggs and original violinist Carrie Bradley, who both played on the Breeders’ first two albums Pod and Last Splash, seamlessly flowed into Metal Man and Drivin’ on 9 with both musicians’ contrasting voices as well as instruments adding an unexpected depth to the evening’s entertainment.

The Breeder’s various incarnations then kept popping onto stage intermittently depending on what album the song came from, to regale us all with the group’s superb back catalogue including the Guided By Voices penned Shocker in Gloomtown (a personal favourite of mine) and the ever popular, and possibly now over played Cannonball. As if we hadn’t had enough surprises already, we were in for one more as another special guest entered the proceedings with the Wolfgang Press’ Michael Allen providing vocals to the rarely played live Oh! He had sung on the Pod original for this track and his appearance clearly delighted the hardcore and older 4AD fraternity in attendance!

The Breeders in their entirety concluded the night’s fare with the whole band from all ages being present on stage, with Kim introducing Carrie and Josephine as ‘The Breedettes’ when they re-emerged to sing backing vocals on a shared microphone for Saints, the curtain then came down with Do You Love Me Now as the encore with Josephine on cello. As mentioned previously, 4AD is a very special record label and tonight’s show was a very special performance from a charismatic and talented band who had an absolute ball on stage and enjoyed every minute of the night equally as much as the crowd of fans young and old. Happy Birthday 4AD, we are already looking forward to your 50th!

The Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/)

Fronted by dual guitarists and identical twin sisters Kim and Kelley Deal, the Breeders are alternative rock's Great Lost Band of the 1990s. So irregular is their output that nine years passed between their second album, 1993's The Last Splash, and 2002's follow-up Title TK.

The senior Deal partner, Kim, recently reunited with her alma mater band the Pixies for a lucrative tour of the world's enormodomes. Tonight's show is a more rarefied affair, launching the 25th anniversary celebrations of the ethereal art-rock independent label, 4AD, which originally spawned both groups.

Article continues (http://www.guardian.co.uk/arts/reviews/story/0,11712,1647791,00.html#article_continue)http://image.guardian.co.uk/Ads/MPU/arrow9x7.gif

4AD always embodied a certain hauteur towards the grubby end of rock'n'roll but the Breeders are very much a rock'n'roll band, albeit one shot through with knowing angularity and a winning insouciance. Gifted dilettantes, they exude the air of a band capable of making a definitive totemic record of their age, if only there weren't so many parties to go to.

They major in jagged alt-rock softened by the Deal sisters' persuasively honeyed vocals, and they are as wickedly disingenuous as ever. Well-documented years of drug and alcohol abuse may have coarsened their vocal chords but Little Fury and Metal Man still suggest the more outre moments of Nirvana cooed by Marilyn Monroe. The lazy genius of Cannonball, all teasing guitar and sprung-rhythm bass, is tossed out halfway through the set: Courtney Love spent a decade trying to write a song as potent. Then Off You, performed by the chain-smoking Deals with take-it-or-leave-it charm, is the loveliest narcotic ballad this side of the Velvet Underground. They are reportedly contemplating recording a fourth studio album, and in a mainstream musical milieu shaped by Franz Ferdinand and Kaiser Chiefs, the Breeders' deliciously carnal art-rock could clean up second time around. If, of course, they can be bothered to do it.

The Breeders : Blackheath Halls : November 19th 2005

http://www.donewaiting.com/emm/archives/4ad-1980.jpg

It's funny how things work out. Back when Kim Deal got together with her chums and released Pod, it was seen as little more than a stop-gap between Pixies albums. It was a 4AD (http://www.4ad.com/) supergroup; what Kim did on her holidays.

Fifteen years later, The Breeders have only released two more albums, and Kim is the only constant across all three. If you weren't looking closely, you might think that this band isn't the most serious of occupations.

On stage, as Kelley giggles her way through the backing vocals on Huffer, you might feel that first impression has been reinforced.

You'd be wrong.

For all that they sometimes appear thrown together, there's an attention to detail in this set, part of the 1980 Forward series of shows for 4AD s 25th anniversary, that shows quite why this band are still so highly regarded, and why people will still be watching what Kim Deal is up to long after the Pixies reunion has faded into distant memory.

Put simply - tonight the Breeders are brilliant.

It starts out with the line-up circa Title TK. They toss out a few minor tracks, you know, No Aloha, Divine Hammer, that sort of thing. And then the Fear guys leave the stage, and Kim introduces Carrie Bradley on backing vocals, Josephine Wiggs on bass, and announces that they've not played the next song live before so they might fuck it up. And it's Metal Man, and its huge, and the band are grinning from ear to ear, and Carrie's manic dancing in the mid-song break characterises how we all feel. You know what that guitar bit reminds me of? It reminds me of My Iron Lung, only much better and 5 years earlier.

Its treat after treat from then on. Carrie picks up her violin, and for Drivin' On 9, Kelley has a mandolin, biting her lip in concentration as she carefully picks out each note. Mick Allen comes out for a walk-on for Oh, reprising his part from the original release, and as an encore, we've got all line-ups covered for Do You Love Me Now? Josephine leaping up from her cello to join the choir for the final refrain.

It's everything that a celebratory concert should be. It's got surprises, guest stars, a genuine sense of occasion. But most of all, its got a great band on top of its game playing great songs. Kim is one of those artists who could command our attention if she was merely going through the motions. And we're lucky that she doesn't.

Music Genre:

Rock/Pop

"The whole thing is totally made up," confides Marc Blinder, the playwright behind The Unauthorized Autobiography of Kim Deal, as the production rehearses. "No facts or anything like that." Authenticity still creeps in, though. Rehearsing "Wave of Mutilation" at West Oakland's Soundwave Studios, the play's house band screws up at the exact point the actual Pixies did onstage at UC Davis in April '04, just a few dates into their triumphant reunion tour.
It's a complicated intro. Deal's bass came in late. The tune collapsed. Frontman Frank Black winced. Kim shrugged. The crowd whooped. The band started over and plowed onward. Two years later, Kim's unauthorized biographer — fringe SF theater company Elastic Future — does the same.
Ms. Deal is known to most of the Western world as the single coolest human being who has ever lived. Above and beyond the mesmerizing stratosphere all female bassists already occupy, Kim's complete (and utterly sexy) nonchalance makes her particularly worthy of worship. And theatrical deification, apparently. "I think a lot of it has got to be her lack of trying," explains Marc, who, incidentally, has written Kim Deal under the pseudonym Sue Butler — it's kind of a complicated story, so let's just observe that Sue is short for Pseudonym. "Totally unglamorous but awesome."
The 75-minute work — to be performed at the SF bar Amnesia the next two weekends — explores the fragile relationship between Kim and her twin sister, Kelley. Act I concerns their teenage years; Act II, Kim's stint inventing alt-rock with the Pixies; Act III, the two siblings' tenure perfecting and bewitching the mainstream alt-rock explosion with the Breeders. Again, any similarity to actual events or conversations is purely coincidental. "In a lot of ways it's based more on the experience of being a fan of their music, more so than their actual lives — whatever came through from the lyrics," Marc explains. He initially got the idea while writing another play and blasting the Pixies record Trompe Le Monde over and over again as motivation; soon he found himself mystified by hidden messages in Breeders songs, interpreting one of Kim's declarations — Saw it on the wall/Motherhood means mental freeze, from Last Splash's "No Aloha" — as a feminist epiphany, and I am the autumn in the scarlet/I am the makeup on your eye ("Off You" from Title TK) as a love letter to Kelley.
Hopefully these interpretations don't strike any nerves with Kim, who presumably is completely unaware of this homage. "If we get sued," director Erin Gilley notes, "we have no assets."
Volume is enough of an asset for now. Strolling through the multi-band Soundwave cacophony on a Sunday afternoon, it's easy to pick out the Kim crowd as a raucous version of the post-reunion Pixies tune "Bam Thwok" seeps from a dimly lit rehearsal room. The play is equally split between standard theatrical dialogue and full-band covers of Kim-associated tunes, from the Pixies' "U-Mass" to the Breeders' deathless "Cannonball," courtesy Oakland band Simon Stinger. Think of it as a play set at a rock concert. Taking "Bam Thwok" again from the top, the band's cue is the line, "Kim, you were always an asshole."
Actor-wise, there are actually two Kims and two Kelleys — one "actor" and one "singer" apiece, occasionally arguing with each other onstage to create a bitchin' Public Artist vs. Private Citizen debate. Consider it "an investigation of what it's all about to have hero worship of people who are just regular people," Marc explains. "To some degree we're trying to deflate celebrity worship and inflate interesting normal people."
"Bam Thwok" is Kim Deal's triumphant finale. After a final rehearsal, most of the actors bail, but Simon Stinger and the Kim/Kelley/Frank Black characters remain to fine-tune the tunes, from Pixies tracks "Bird Dream of the Olympus Mons" and "Bone Machine" to the Breeders' "I Just Wanna Get Along" — fake Kim and Kelley spend a few minutes figuring out how to deliver the line If you're so special/Why aren't you dead? while Erin takes notes with a festive candy-cane-shaped pen. These versions aren't ultra-precise ("Cannonball" is a trickier tune to pull off than its ultra-catchy ubiquity would suggest), but a ramshackle homage suits the Deals' volatility, full of endless woozy between-album intervals and ill-advised FedEx deliveries. Drugs, inevitably, play a role here, but not in a cheesy After-School Special way, Erin and Marc insist.
No, judging from the rehearsals, this is a fast-and-loose celebration, "environmental theater" as Erin puts it, with the actors potentially ordering drinks from the Amnesia bar mid-show and in character, that sort of thing. It's a tribute born of very gentle obsession. "When the Pixies came to Berkeley, they stopped between songs and I was like, 'I LOVE YOU KIM!!" Marc recalls. "And she laughed, and I was like 'YEAHHH!!'" With swooning classics from "Debaser" to "Drivin' on 9" at their disposal, the Kim Deal crew should have no trouble justifying and celebrating such affection. Even if "Wave of Mutilation" wobbles a bit out of the gate. The most endearing and fascinating things tend to fall apart.
