Marvel Closes $525 Million Debt Line, Will Produce Own Films

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Marvel Enterprises Inc. (MVL) completed a $525 million, seven-year debt facility to finance 10 films based on its comic-book characters.

In a press release Tuesday, Marvel said it plans to launch independently- financed films to gain greater profit potential and to take more control over movie production and release dates.

Prior films that featured Marvel characters were made through licensing deals with other studios.

Marvel Enterprises said Viacom Inc.'s (VIA, VIAB) Paramount unit agreed to distribute the films. The first title is scheduled for release in the summer of 2008.

Marvel will change its name to Marvel Entertainment Inc., reflecting the company's expanding Hollywood presence.

Merrill Lynch Pierce Fenner & Smith Inc. arranged the debt facility, which consists of $465 million in revolving senior bank debt and $60 million in mezzanine debt. The theatrical film rights is the collateral on the loan.

The characters in the arrangement are Captain America, The Avengers, Nick Fury, Black Panther, Ant-Man, Cloak & Dagger, Dr. Strange, Hawkeye, Power Pack, and Shang-Chi. Each film is expected to have a budget of up to $165 million. Marvel plans to use the financing to make live-action films.

Marvel will provide an overview of its proposed film slate at a conference call starting at 11 a.m. EDT.

No sé. Smells like turkey...

No sé... So, no tengo esperanzas...

Variety has confirmed that after more than two years of unsuccessful development at New Line, Marvel has taken back film rights to Iron Man, the comic book about an inventor who dons a high-tech suit and becomes a superhero.

The company may raise additional money to produce Iron Man itself as part of its new internal production slate. In such a case, the film would likely be distributed by Paramount, where Marvel has a distribution deal.

"Right now we're concentrating on finding the right creative talent," explained Marvel Studios' Avi Arad. "It's not a part of our slate deal, but we can raise the money to do it if we choose to. We would also have no difficulty licensing it to another studio."
